E-news from St. Joe's Foundation | 2019 Edition 3

Dr. Greg Rutledge, Chief of Emergency Medicine, St. Joseph's Hospital Hamilton.

24 Hours a Day, 7 Days a Week, 365 Days a Year:
Dr. Rutledge and his ER team are Ready to Care for You.

On average, Dr. Greg Rutledge, the Chief of Emergency Medicine at our Hospital, and his team see about 130 patients come through the ER at St. Joe's on Christmas Day alone. That’s almost the same number of patients we see any other day of the year—showing that sometimes, emergencies do happen over the holidays. That’s why we’re asking our community to support St. Joe’s during the season of giving. To make a gift, visit here.

As the busiest ER in the city, and an area of our hospital that never, ever closes, the need for facility repairs and equipment replacement is never-ending. From vital sign monitors to blankets, stethoscopes to stretchers, Dr. Rutledge’s department needs all of these items and more to be on hand and at the ready, 24/7/365.

In addition to the funds raised through our holiday giving campaign, one of our favourite parts of the season is the notes we receive back from our generous community of donors that impart holiday wishes to the staff members and patients who may need to spend their holiday inside our Hospital. To view a few of our favourites, check out the recent posts on our social media channels.

Firestone 40Pictured (left to right): Dr. Martin Kolb, Director of the Division of Respirology at McMaster University; Melissa Sulpher, patient; and Dr. Tom Stewart, CEO & President, St. Joseph’s Health System, and CEO Niagara Health.

On Friday, October 18th, St. Joe's celebrated the Firestone Institute for Respiratory Health’s (FIRH) 40th anniversary. This collaborative research and clinical care partnership between St. Joe’s and McMaster University has led to research discoveries that save lives by advancing the understanding and treatment of chronic and life-threatening lung diseases like Asthma, COPD and more.

Investing in leading-edge healthcare and research is nothing new to the Boris Family, and we couldn’t be more grateful and excited to announce the philanthropic family’s new
$2 million donation to the Firestone Institute for Respiratory Health! This gift will help the hospital and university recruit a new leader for FIRH who will ensure this four decade legacy of improving patient care through respiratory research continues for decades more to come.

On Friday, November 15th we celebrated the official naming and grand re-opening of the Jack & Jean Marchese Dialysis Unit at the Charlton Campus. This 16-month project has been a true labour of love and a demonstration of what can be accomplished when we all work together.

Our Hospital and Foundation thanks Jack Marchese for his remarkable leadership gift of $1 million to this project. In total, St. Joseph’s Healthcare Foundation helped to raise and allocate $2.5 million for the Unit’s renovation—none of which would have been possible without our community of grateful patients, donors and friends, not to mention support from several of our own nephrologists.
