St. Joe's Mourns the Loss of Charles Juravinski

There are people who seem to defy the passage of time, and Charles Juravinski was one of them. While he was in his 92nd year, we were both surprised and saddened to learn of his passing on February 16, 2022. But we were also fortified by a strong desire to ensure that we live up to the high expectations he, and his wife Margaret, set out for us as a leading academic health sciences centre in Hamilton.
Together, over the past 20 years, Charles and Margaret donated more than $20 million to St. Joseph’s Healthcare Foundation. Their gifts have shaped the landscape of St. Joseph’s Healthcare Hamilton.

All of us at St. Joe’s offer our most sincere condolences to Margaret Juravinski who has lost her lifelong love so soon after celebrating their 65th Valentine’s Day together. We hope that Charles may rest in peace knowing that he will be fondly remembered by all of us at St. Joe’s. We promise to honour his memory and continue his legacy through the care we provide and the research we pursue.

For Dialysis, Sometimes There’s No Place Like Home
Pat Watson didn’t let chronic kidney disease keep her down; she always lived life to the fullest. In fact, when her nephrologist (her kidney specialist, Dr. Alistair Ingram) was asked to describe her, he said, “The word that immediately comes to mind when I think of Pat is quite simply, ‘fun’. I’m sure it could sound strange for a doctor to describe his patient, who was living with chronic kidney disease and on dialysis, as fun…but that’s the truth of it. Pat was a whole lot of fun.”
Pat passed away in 2006 following a lengthy and courageous battle with kidney disease. Her husband, chief enabler, constant sidekick and travelling companion, Mike, and their two daughters, Laura and Emma, wanted to honour Pat’s memory with a generous gift that would directly benefit patients in the Dialysis Program at St. Joe’s…patients just like Pat. Their generous donation helped St. Joe’s to purchase two point-of-care ultrasound machines for the newly renovated Jack and Jean Marchese Dialysis Centre at the Charlton Campus. Benefit Concert Raises Nearly $60,000 for Prostate Cancer Care

On Friday, February 11, Alan Frew of the iconic Canadian rock band Glass Tiger made a rare appearance at Hamilton’s historic Zoetic Theatre for a sold-out benefit concert in support of St. Joe’s. A Valentine’s Evening with Alan Frew saw the Juno-award-winning vocalist of ‘80s anthems like Don’t Forget Me (When I’m Gone) and Someday sharing songs and stories from his life and career. Event proceeds coupled with donations from attendees and event supporters tallied nearly $60,000. These funds will help to bring MRI Fusion Biopsy technology to St. Joe’s to support the early detection and diagnosis of prostate cancer. A special thanks goes out to local businessmen Gabe Macaluso, Matteo Sacco and Stefano Girgenti for organizing this incredible community fundraiser, as well as to Anthony Macaluso for hosting the event at The Zoetic. To watch a video created just for the event, and read more about the concert, click here.

The Bay Race is Back in Support of St. Joe's
The Around the Bay Road Race returns March 27 with a hybrid in-person/virtual event, and St. Joe’s is pleased to return as an official charity partner for the 17th year “running.” There are still spots open in the 5K walk/run, and we'd love to see you register and fundraise in support of St. Joe's! Visit our website to get started. All of the other in-person race categories are already sold out, but St. Joe’s can still get you in with a Charity Spot! All you have to do is pay the corresponding registration amount listed below, and we’ll refund whatever portion of the registration fee you are able to fundraise between now and race day. That means if you fundraise the full amount, you’ll run for free — a win-win! St. Joe’s Charity Spot registration fees are as follows:
- Two-Person Relay = $1,000*
- Three-Person Relay = $1,500*
Funds raised through this year’s Bay Race will support the expansion and renewal of our Emergency Mental Health Service, a service that’s more important than ever as our Hospital responds to an increase in demand for mental healthcare amid the COVID-19 pandemic. Funds raised will also bring us one step closer to creating a new CT suite in our busy Emergency Department to help the patients we serve get access to the answers they need, sooner. So, race on over to our website to learn more and secure your spot.
*Please note that due to Canada Revenue Agency guidelines for charitable giving, Charity Spot participants are not eligible to receive fundraising incentive prizes. |
You’re a Real Life Saver: An Update on our CT Suite Project

This holiday season, we asked for help to bring a CT suite to St. Joe’s Emergency Department. And our community answered the call. The support of almost 1,000 people (and 155 first-time donors) for our annual holiday appeal, along with gifts from a small group of passionate supporters, has helped us raise $578,229 to date for this vital project. Together, these gifts from our community mean we’re more than 30 per cent of the way towards our estimated goal to get this project underway.
Along with gifts to our Hospital, donors also mailed in countless notes of gratitude to St. Joe’s staff. These were posted in our Emergency Department to bolster the spirits of our care teams (we like to think of them as Life Savers, too) and personally thank them for going above and beyond to care for our community during the pandemic. Looking ahead, we’ll continue working with our community to help raise the rest of the funds needed for this vital construction project. Learn why a CT Suite is so essential to the care we provide, or make a gift by visiting our website. |
This Tax Season, St. Joe’s Reminds You of Contribution Deadlines & Donation Possibilities

As income tax season approaches, St. Joe’s reminds you that the deadline for contributing to your RRSPs for the 2021 tax year is on March 1, 2022. Income tax doesn’t just affect you during your life, it can also have a significant impact on your estate, too. Many Canadians are surprised to learn how much their estate will have to pay in taxes when all their assets are realized. But by naming a charity like St. Joseph’s Healthcare Foundation as a beneficiary of your registered accounts like RRSPs or RRIFs, you can reduce the taxes your estate will need to pay while also supporting a charity that is close to your heart.
