Zain Chagla Video.PNG

Dr. Zain Chagla is the Medical Director, Infection Control at St. Joseph's Healthcare Hamilton. Dr. Chagla's vast experience and knowledge of infectious diseases, coupled with his natural ability to speak to these concepts have made him a mainstay in the media's discourse surrounding COVID-19. On Healthcare Philanthropy: An Opinion Piece by William J. Walker

Bill-Walker-enews.jpg

In late January, the chair of our Foundation's Board, Mr. William J. Walker, wrote an opinion piece that was published in The Hamilton Spectator entitled 'Philanthropy’s critical role in healthcare'. In the piece, Mr. Walker makes a case for what many of you already know: that both small and large donations from our generous community have helped to enhance and advance the care we're honoured to provide to patients at St. Joe's.

Healthcare philanthropy has helped bring advanced surgical robots to St. Joe’s; created a more inclusive home for mental health care at our West 5th Campus; and more recently funded much-needed PPE and on-site research that has resulted in faster ways of diagnosing cases of COVID-19.

You can read Mr. Walker's full opinion piece on our website.

How Your Holiday Gifts are Helping our Hospital

Holiday-Appeal-Wrap.jpg

One year later, the COVID-19 pandemic continues to place unprecedented strains upon our nation’s healthcare system and on our Hospital, too. Here at St. Joseph’s Healthcare Hamilton, we’ve had to purchase much more PPE than in any other time in our history. We’ve had to invest in new equipment and new research to help us combat and understand this new virus - quickly. We’ve had to make more room for COVID-19 patients - and all of this was something that simply wasn’t budgeted for pre-pandemic.

In response to our holiday direct mail appeal, nearly 1,000 people made donations to our Hospital and had their gifts matched dollar-for-dollar by an anonymous supporter known as the Ever Hopeful Fund. Your generous gifts made online, through the mail and over the phone were matched for double the impact and together, we raised a remarkable $235,000 for St. Joe’s. Learn more about how your donations are already making a difference at the Hospital by reading the full story.

From Science Fiction to Reality: Artificial Intelligence and its Applications to Robotic Surgery at St. Joe’s

AI-imagery---TD.jpg

When we hear the words ‘artificial intelligence’, our brains almost immediately conjure images from a sci-fi movie, but the Oxford Dictionary offers this more accurate definition: the theory and development of computer systems able to perform tasks that normally require human intelligence, such as visual perception, speech recognition, decision making and translation between languages.

Here at St. Joe’s we’re integrating AI into the care we provide at the Boris Family Centre for Robotic Surgery, thanks to a $300,000 grant from TD Bank Group. Part of the grant enabled St. Joe’s to acquire the new da Vinci XI surgical robot in September 2020. The remainder has been allocated to investigating the role AI can play in the personalized delivery of medicine, enhancing patient satisfaction following joint replacement surgeries, improving the effectiveness of early stage lung cancer procedures and more.

“We know that concepts like artificial intelligence and robotic surgery can be difficult to imagine, but they’re exactly the kind of advancement that makes it possible for our doctors and researchers to push boundaries, to challenge assumptions and traditional methods of care, and shape the future of medicine. We’re so grateful to TD for their belief in our Hospital and for their foresight into funding innovative healthcare technology,” says Sera Filice-Armenio, President & CEO, St. Joseph’s Healthcare Foundation.

Black Table Talk: A New Program at St. Joseph's Youth Wellness Centre

BHM-enews.jpg

In honour of Black History Month, we wanted to share another story with you about a relatively new program at our Youth Wellness Centre that we were pleased to support thanks to a grant from the Bell Let’s Talk program. It’s called Black Table Talk and the program lead, Rayanne Banaga, worked in consultation with the Black youth council at Bernie Custis Secondary School to develop a program to provide racialized youth with tools to cope with emotional trauma, along with peer support skills to support one another. Launched in October 2020, and already making a difference, you can read more about this incredible program here.

Run, Walk or Trot your way Through this Year's Virtual Bay Race!

ATB-Video-Thumbnail.jpg

We are incredibly excited to announce that the Around the Bay Road Race will return on March 25th for a full month as this historic event pivots to a virtual format in 2021. This Spring, you can run, walk or trot your way through a 5k, 30k, or the new Hammer distance categories all while raising funds for St. Joe’s!

Funds raised through this year’s Bay Race will support mental health and addiction programs and services at St. Joe’s including the expansion and renewal of our Emergency Mental Health Services at the Charlton Campus. We believe that these services have never been more important as the COVID-19 pandemic continues to take a toll on everyone’s mental health and emotional wellbeing.
