How Robotic Surgery Helps Patients Like Holly

Hanna-Story-Collage.jpg

Dr. Waël Hanna is one of the country’s top robotic lung cancer surgeons, and he works right here in Hamilton, right here at the Boris Family Centre for Robotic Surgery at St. Joe’s. Last week, he and his patient, Holly Mauro, were on CHCH News and spoke with Jon Wells from The Hamilton Spectator about St. Joseph’s Healthcare Hamilton’s new surgical robot, the da Vinci Xi. Dr. Hanna explained how robotic surgery can help early stage lung cancer patients, like Holly, to receive the care they need while also freeing up valuable bed space during COVID-19 by accelerating the healing process following cancer surgeries.

We hope you will take great pride in knowing that the acquisition of this new robot was made possible solely by the donations made by YOU, our generous community of supporters! Leadership gifts of $1.5 million were made by the Marta & Owen Boris Foundation and AIM Recycling Hamilton, while an anonymous donor made a $1 million gift of their own. These gifts were augmented by the support of thousands more who believe, as we do at St. Joe’s, that robotic surgery is the future of care.

And if you listen to our most recent patient, Holly, she believes it, too. Your support is making life-changing surgeries possible at St. Joe’s. Thank You! Learn more about our robotic surgery journey by reading the article in our Donor Impact Report.

Dr. Zain Chagla on Bundling Up to Cope with COVID-19

Dr. Zain Chagla

Dr. Zain Chagla is the Medical Director, Infection Control at St. Joseph's Healthcare Hamilton, and he’s become a popular media go-to for advice about all things COVID-19 related. During a recent interview with CBC Hamilton, Dr. Chagla suggested that Canadians may wish to bundle up to help cope with COVID-19 this winter. Here's why:

"There's a reason why we see respiratory viruses in the winter in Canada," said Dr. Chagla. "We tend to be indoors more, gathered in poorly ventilated settings, which helps viruses like the flu or COVID-19 to spread more easily and quickly."

So what should we do?

“Invest in some good, warm winter clothing,” recommends Dr. Chagla. "We're going to have a long winter but the outdoors is still a viable option for people to meet in," he said. "The risk is so low — it isn't zero — but it's modified. As long as it's permitted to meet outside, it's a good option. Even short outdoor meetings can provide a much-needed emotional boost. Having 15 minutes of real-life interaction is just so precious for people," he concluded.

Send a Holiday Greeting to those Spending their Holidays in our Hospital

buttonforornament1400.jpg

Due to the 24-7 nature of healthcare, many of our care providers will need to spend their holidays at our Hospital, caring for the patients we’re honoured to serve. But you can bring a little holiday spirit to them by sending an online greeting of hope and healing at holidaytraditions.ca. While online, you can also choose to make a gift to support our Hospital as we fight the second wave of the COVID-19 virus. Your gift will be matched, dollar for dollar, through the generosity of an anonymous donor known as the Ever Hopeful Fund. Your $50 donation becomes $100, your $200 donation becomes $400, meaning every gift will have double the impact! There’s never been a better time to support St. Joe’s and our Hospital has never needed your support more than we do right now.

A Gift to Help our Hospital Purchase PPE | DiCenzo Family donates $100,000

Thank You PPE

Since the beginning of the pandemic, St. Joseph’s Healthcare Hamilton has spent significant funds on personal protective equipment like medical, surgical and N-95 masks, gloves, gowns, face shields and more. It’s a cost that our Hospital hadn’t budgeted for pre-pandemic, but in light of the reality that our staff will be wearing these items in clinical settings for months more to come, we knew it was an expense we would need to find a way to cover. Recently, the DiCenzo family, second-generation Hamilton home builders, made a $100,000 donation to the Hospital dedicated solely for the purchase of PPE. We’re so grateful to the donors who offer their support to help with projects that need it the most. Read more about their story here.
