Charles and Margaret Juravinski invest $3.3 million in COVID-19 and brain health research

Philanthropists Charles and Margaret Juravinski have made a new gift of $3.3 million to accelerate COVID-19-related and brain health research as part of the newly formed Juravinski Research Institute in Hamilton.

Last spring the couple created an endowment of $100 million or more to support collaborative research across Hamilton Health Sciences, McMaster University and St. Joseph’s Healthcare Hamilton. Their estate commitment is one of Canada’s largest ever planned legacy gifts and established the Juravinski Research Institute.

We have seen a lot in our lives, and we know by now that there is more than enough ingenuity and goodwill in this world to defeat this pandemic,” the couple said in a new Letter to the Community. “Bringing ingenuity and goodwill together requires resources, and that is why we are making this gift. Our wish is that it may inspire hope. We hope it will produce results that benefit people immediately. We urge others to find ways to give what they can.Read more...

Thank You for Lending a Hand to our Heroes of Healthcare

Not long ago, we reached out and asked for your support of the superheroes who work at St. Joe's, and our network of friends and supporters answered the call. Thank you for your generous donations to our COVID-19 Emergency Response Fund. With your support, we’re helping our Hospital to purchase much needed equipment, to re-stock supplies, to create more patient care spaces and to prepare for the forecasted rise in COVID-19 cases in our city. While the government is putting together a plan to help our Hospitals cope with the unprecedented need for care during the pandemic, there are urgent needs that together, we can help to fund through philanthropy. We appreciate your unwavering support of St. Joe’s during this time when we need you the most.

In the meantime, we hope that you are staying safe and doing your part to prevent the spread of the COVID-19 virus. If you are looking for information on the ways in which our hospital is working to contain and combat the virus here in Hamilton, we invite you to visit stjoes.ca/coronavirus.

Making noise for St. Joe's!

Thank you to our healthcare heroes!

We are so grateful to the kind people who live across the street from our Emergency Department on James Street South! Every evening at 7:30 p.m., they step onto their balconies, bang pots and pans, clap, whistle and cheer on the dedicated staff and physicians who are caring for our community during the COVID-19 pandemic. It may seem like a small gesture, but it's random acts of kindness like this that perk our care team up when they are tired, give them hope when they are discouraged, and remind them that their bravery and compassion are appreciated.
